ASUS EEE 700

The first version of the ASUS EEE is the 700 series. There are 4 models and 2 operating systems so it is quite a mix.

What are the major features?

We have a sub-notebook PC with 7"color screen, a microphone, and stereo speakers. The Surf models have either 2 GB or 4 GB hard disks but no web cam. The PC models have 4 GB or 8 GB hard disks and a built-in web cam.

The basic idea from ASUS is to provide a small PC as a mobile office and communication device. There is no CD or DVD drive. Any backup can be accomplished using an SD card or cards. It is more expensive than a PDA but it can do everything that a PDA and a portable PC can do. The limitation is the size of the solid-state disc drive. The disc drive is really an SD card fixed onto the chassis of the EEE.

The major selling point of the EEE and the reason for the name is its ease of use.

The games may be limited but there are six games available on the Linux operating system. The basic games available to a Windows XP user will be available when the XP system is loaded.

A word processor is provided. This is either OpenOffice for the Linux Operating system or Microsoft Works for the Windows XP.

Your choice of operating system will be determined not by what is available on the machine as standard but any software that you consider essential for your use. Adding software to a Linux system can either be very easy or be a job for an expert in Linux. There is no middle ground. If you look at the software that is available and can live with that, then stick with Linux, as the cut-down Windows XP version on this machine will be available for the foreseeable future, but Windows XP will cease to be produced in June of 2008. Reading in the computer press I have found that ASUS are in discussions with Microsoft about being able to use a cut-down version of Windows 7 on the EEE and similar machines but currently this operating system will not be available until at least 2009

Who will use the ASUS EEE 700 series?

I see three groups of people using this machine.

Businessmen wanting to keep in communication with their offices and not wanting to carry a full-weight portable. The ASUS EEE weighs less than 1 Kg and is far lighter than a portable. There are not many leads and extras to carry, only the power lead and maybe an adapter for the local power supply for where you are going.

Parents who want another computer that they can control. They do not want to have their latest machine taken over by the children as a games machine and so will use the EEE as a small machine that the kids do not want to use.

Small children who need to lean about computers but are not yet wise enough to treat a computer gently. This machine should be rugged and not get broken easily.

If in your business you want to cut down your weight while traveling then the ASUS EEE is for you. If your home needs to add an extra computer without taking all the remaining space then buy it for yourself and don't fight over the computers.

Seniors playing Wii video games? If you are thinking of buying a new Nintendo Wii Or Wii Fit for the older members of the family for Christmas this year, then you are in for a treat. This has brought us all closer as we see how funny it is for reasonable adults to have a cow and lose it, we do not take out own childish fights very seriously anymore, cause they always remind us of how funny Grandpa and Grandma were, fighting over the Wii boxing game or the Wii bowling score final. The other great thing about playing Wii with my grandparents is that, now, they get my brother & I more. Before they learned to play Wii they always criticized us for being video game addicts. Not so much anymore! Now the whole family is a bunch of mega Wii gamers and we all play together. Personally, though I guess it sounds a bit shallow; I love my Wii addicted family more now that we all play Wii games together, learn new stuff together, laugh together and laugh about getting mad at each other together. I guess this is family togetherness & love in the 21st century! So Be It! Gramps & Gramma & Ma & Pa, Aunti DO DO & Uncle K: WELCOME To Our World of Wii It's good to be here together. Widescreen refers to the width of the screen in contrast with its height. This is also known as the aspect ratio. A traditional TV may be rather square in shape, and that is because the width is similar (or almost) to the height. The aspect ratio of the traditional TV is 1:1.

A widescreen on the other hand, has a wider screen compared to its height. The ratio of a widescreen TV is 16:9, which makes the TV obviously rectangular in shape. Not only does the widescreen TV looks more modern, it is better for the view of the human eyes too. In fact, it is more natural for the human eyes to view. This improves a user's experience and transfers information more accurately to the user.

1. Apportion your budget evenly and wisely

6. Rear speaker settings
If individual sounds from rear speakers attract your attention try lowering their level in the set-up of your processor or increasing their delay. A piece of film recorded in a heavy ambient environment (such as a church or cathedral) is ideal for this.

7. Positioning of display device
When positioning a TV or plasma screen avoid reflections on the glass from lights or windows. These are best observed with the set switched off. Do not install your screen too high (usually above fire places) as it will cause a sore neck after long periods of viewing.

8. Customising default display settings
Factory settings on TVs are designed to look good in a retail store, not your living room. Invest in a test DVD such as Video Essentials and follow the instructions carefully for the best results.

9. Video connections
Normal analogue interconnects will not function correctly with video signals. Ask your dealer for 75ohm coaxial cables for your video connections.

You want to buy a flat screen TV and you are not being able to decide whether to go for Plasma vs LCD TV. At the very first instance, you should know that the question of burn-in is not a problem as it was before with Plasma TVs. It could be said that it is not as bad as it was with the older Plasma TV models. In order that you may decide on which type of TV you are going to buy, there are three questions which you need to answer. Few guidelines are presented below.

Reflections and Glare from the Screen

The first question is if the room where you going to watch the TV is well lit or dark. This brings up the question of ambient light. The light in the room is one of the most important factors in choosing Plasma vs LCD TV or the other way around. The quality of images in a Plasma TV lowers as the amount of ambient light in the room increases. LCD TVs generally perform better in a well lit room when compared to plasma TVs.

Plasma and LCD TV offer different picture quality, and depends on the amount of ambient light present in the room. A Plasma TV offers a better quality of the images in a low ambient light environment. A much better picture quality is offered by Plasma TV in a dark room, having a better contrast ratio, and dark black levels in comparison to a LCD TV. If you watch a Plasma TV in a well lit room, the picture would look dimmer than what you will find in a LCD TV. This is mainly due to the glare and reflections from the ambient light.

But this slight problem in Plasma TVs has been somewhat taken care of. With anti-glare screen being used in some of the best Plasma TVs, the effect of ambient light on image quality has been greatly reduced. In the last decade, the battle between cable television and satellite television has only gotten stronger. Now, with the nearly-imminent switch to purely digital tv, perhaps a slight re-examination is in order.

Satellite tv would seem to have the edge, being a digital medium from its base, while cable has had to adapt increasingly. In short, cable is becoming more like satellite. Both offer high-quality digital images, both offer any number of bonuses, such as digital recording devices (think TiVo), different packages from basic to premium, priced to suit various budgets, etc.

Speaking from personal experience, I find that cable and satellite TV have their strong points. But I also know what most of you know: convenience is vital. If you're like me at all, you don't want to have to mess around with a lot of complicated set-ups. Let's take installation for example. The cable company supplies a bulky device that I have to go to the cable company and get and set up myself because I find the company's delivery and labor fees ridiculous. That leaves me to install it myself. That involves considerable work: having to set it up gingerly (because electronics can be fragile; always good to play it safe), knowing which cord plugs into which receiver, and so on. And I have to do it with about six inches of clearance between the television set and the wall. And I consider myself lucky, because I know how to do all of that. There are people out there who don't know the first thing about setting up a home entertainment system.

The satellite companies, DishNetwork being one of them, more often than not, offer free installation. That means that once you make your decision, a qualified technician from the company comes to your home and sets it up for you at no extra cost. The most it will take is an hour, and thanks to modern technology, you really don't have to worry about losing the signal during rainstorms or other nasty weather. Those considerations are a thing of the past. Once the set up is complete, you are good to go.

Getting a program on demand is another consideration. When I order pay-per-view with the cable company, most of the time it's not as simple as advertised. Eight times out of ten, I can't get it because of some reason I know nothing about. I never had that problem with the satellite company. Press, watch, good night.

So with the coming digital revolution, I suggest you get out there and do your research. It works for me, so anyone can do it.

Why go flat screen? Flat screen TVs are not just the trend, they also give you more in terms of viewing space. Although a 20" flat screen TV may have the same measurements as the more traditional 'curved' screen TV usually found on CRTs, the flat screen gives the illusion of extended width and height. If this is your dream gadget for this year, here are a few tips you can use when choosing and buying a flat screen TV:

Sometimes, flat screen is just that - flat screen.

High-end television units such as plasma TVs, HDTVs and LCD TVs all feature a flat screen. However, there are also lower-priced CRT (cathode ray tube) TVs that feature a flat screen but do not have the same features and capabilities as its more expensive cousins. Don't just think that because it's a flat screen, it's automatically a plasma or an LCD.

Thin is a good thing.

They might be banning super-thin models on the catwalk but people definitely welcome thin, flat-panel TVs with open arms. When buying a flat screen TV, look for a unit that is slimmer than the older CRTs. There are brands such as Philips, for example, that sell flat screen TVs that are thinner than usual. They may not be as thin as sleek plasmas and LCDs but they will do well in your living room or anywhere you intend to put them in your home.

Thin flat screen TVs are also easier to move and they don't occupy a lot of space. You'll thank yourself later when it's time to re-locate the unit to a better viewing area or in case you move to a smaller apartment.

Plasma or LCD?

Either one of these flat screen TVs would be a good choice, depending of course on what you want and what you expect. Budget, too, is a factor. Both are thin and offer a smooth face, although LCDs tend to be lighter. The cinematic experience is also enhanced with both, since the aspect ratio of today's units are at 16:9 - meaning, images will appear more rectangular.

To choose from either type of flat screen TV, consider the following:

Size. Plasmas tend to come in monster sizes although LCDs aren't too bad either. If you prefer size, go for plasma.

Resolution and image display. Plasmas show excellent details and sharpness, especially along the edges of the onscreen image. LCDs, on the other hand, allow you to view images unchanged even in bright conditions.

Budget. Prices are currently nearly head-to-head, so it's really up to how much your bank account will allow you to buy.

Go for picture quality.

Ultimately, a TV is made for viewing. You can't really appreciate a TV if it doesn't count for much in the image display department. Regardless of the technology behind it, a flat screen TV isn't worth your time, effort and money if it can't deliver a decent picture.

Spend some time with your intended purchase and examine its performance. Look for differences in picture delivery, particularly in the areas where blacks contrast with white or bright colors or when a high-speed scene is being shown. How well you can tolerate a flat screen TV's performance in these areas will of course depend on your preference, patience and budget.

However, it pays to consider the kind of money you'll be shelling out for the type of viewing pleasure the TV will give you. If you're the type who looks forward to spending hours and hours on end in front of the TV, then make sure the flat screen TV you choose won't disappoint.

If you bought a 50" plasma and receiver with surround sound a few years ago and you want to kick it up a notch for the upcoming football season here's an idea...

Thanks to the fact that HDTV projectors are far less expensive than they used to be, you can turn your TV room into a full blown Home Theater for as little as $3,000.00. Here's the concept....use your plasma for most TV shows and when it's time to watch the big game or movie, turn your room into a home theater by sending your HDTV signal to a projector that shoots an image 120" diagonal on to a screen mounted in front of your plasma.

How to Do It

Screen: You are going to mount a retractable HDTV screen above and just in front of your plasma and mount a HDTV projector in the back of the room. The most common size screen is 120" diagonal. Determine what screen size you should purchase, go to mountsandmore.com

Projector: Sony is the biggest player in the front projector market. Two favorites are:

Sony VPL-VW60: Home Theater magazine says the "SonyVPL-VW60 is a" great projector at a great price". It projects a beautiful1080P image and sells for about $5,000.00.

If you're tight on money, the Sony VPL- AW15 is an incredible deal at about $1,100. No kidding, no typo! Although this model is only capable of projecting an image in 720P format, (1080 is best) Home Theater Magazine says "No rear projector or flat panel at anywhere near the cost can offer a big screen experience like this!"

Projector Mount: Due to variables like ceiling height, you're going to need a little help here. I suggest contacting projectorpeople.com and have them help you determine the correct projector mount.

Connections: Your HDTV projector only needs two connections, power and HDMI (high definition multi media interface).

Power: If you can afford it, have an electrician install a power outlet near the location you will be installing your projector. If you don't have the budget, just buy an extension cord that closely matches the color of your wall and run the wires as cleanly as possible to the nearest outlet.

HDMI: You will need to run a HDMI cable from your receiver to your projector. It looks best if you run your wires in the wall or under the carpet. You may want to have a home theater installer handle this for you.

You will need to purchase a HDMI switch as most receivers have only 1 HDMI out connection.

Black Out Curtains: The black in a projected image comes from the black in the room so you need to keep your room as dark as possible when you are in Home Theater mode. I suggest logging on totarget.com/ where you can purchase black out curtains and rods for as little as $29.99 each and install yourself.

If you're a do-it-yourself person, you can save some money installing yourself. If not, I recommend contacting finding pre screened contractors through the use of an online service called servicemagic.com/ Service magic is an on line contractor referral service that will get you three bids on anything you need to get done.

Usually the question goes like this: cable or satellite. But very seldom does anyone consider the implications once the choice is made.

If you go with satellite, for example, you have to know where to get one. Some people will try electronics shops. But that involves unnecessary travel, dealing with technobabble-spouting salespeople trying to push a deal on you that you don't want. Why bother with all that when you can buy online?

More importantly, once you've decided on a satellite package, the intelligent consumer will study each company to see which one gives the best deal.

Having been in this position myself, there are certain ground rules and guidelines I try to follow. They say good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment. Well, they were right. I wouldn't say I showed bad judgment with my first satellite package. I liked it just fine, but it seemed like the technology was mushrooming so rapidly within a year's time, it was outdated.

Now, as a happy customer with DISHNetwork, perhaps I can share a few of these groundrules with you.

1) Never pay more than you have to. If you can cut out the middleman, go for it. It saves time as well as money.

2) Never be afraid of questions. This helps in two big areas. One, it shows the salesperson that you're not just some rube off the street who is an easy mark. More importantly, if you're not sure, ask about it. Even if you feel like you're being a bother, it'll be much easier for you in the long run, as you won't have those awful attacks of buyer's remorse.

3) Never be afraid of answers. From them or you. Honesty is the best policy.

4) Don't research so much that you second-guess yourself. You should try to maintain a careful balance between knowledge, research and good old-fashioned gut instinct.

5) Be open-minded. Always be willing to take things as they come. But don't be a doormat. Always keep an open mind. But not so open that your brain falls out.

One of the best canon cameras out there right now is the Canon Powershot SD790IS digital camera. After reviewing several other models, this one came out on top.

You will be quickly impressed with the startup speed of the camera and the qualities of the pictures from the Canon Powershot SD790IS are superb. You can take approximately 150 shots and still have lots of battery power. This feature alone puts this one in a class of its own. The flash recharge speed is extremely fast when compared to other thin digital cameras.

Pictures taken on the "auto" mode come out looking perfect and the color always seems accurate. Faces are not washed out; pictures taken in bright sunlight, distance shots or close up, all come out as you want them to, great!

The Canon Powershot SD790IS digital camera turns on and is ready to use almost instantly, and focuses quickly. Pictures turn out sharp and clear, even with the flash, the zoom works easily with a very accessible button, and there is absolutely no red eye.

The camera is small enough to fit into your pocket and surprisingly light. But don't let the small package fool you as this is one digital camera packed full of features with high quality construction. The body is made from metal rather than plastic which gives it a better feel and makes it sturdier.

The 3.0" LCD screen of the Canon Powershot SD790IS digital camera is bright, and is clearly visible even in bright sun. There is no need for a viewfinder with this one. Another good thing about this camera; it is possible to view images on the camera's screen without extending the lens.When turned off, just hold down the play button to turn on image playback. The lens won't pop out.

This is a great digital camera, and probably the best out there right now in its price range and even better than some more expensive models.

If you plan on shooting a lot in auto mode and want a thin camera with the 3 inch screen, the Canon Powershot SD790IS is the way to go. Another unique feature is that the camera can sense which way you're holding it and shifts the image on the screen.

This review of the Canon Powershot SD790IS digital camera is geared more toward the casual user pointing out features that most people would be interested in rather than from a more technical point of view.

Whether you are looking for a camera to take pictures of your vacations, week-end trips or the kids as they are growing up, the Canon Powershot 790IS digital camera is one that I highly recommend.
